A few weeks back, we were asked to visit St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Willenhall who were looking to replace their Victorian pipe organ with a digital instrument. The decision to consider a digital alternative was due to the prohibitive cost of bringing the original pipe organ back up to standard.
A Historic Nicholson & Lord Instrument
The organ, built in the 1800s by Nicholson & Lord of Walsall, has been a central part of the church’s music for over a century. In 1968, the maintenance of the instrument was taken over by the firm Hawkins. Impressively, everything on the organ since it was installed in St. Mary’s is original, with the only major repair work being made to the blower.
The Challenge of Restoring the Pipe Organ
Although an excellent tone, the organ is showing its age and really needs a complete rebuild. Fortunately, rather than being dismantled, the instrument will be kept in a playable condition. Who knows?! In the future, funding may be found to bring the organ back to its former glory.
A Curious Discovery – Unusual Rocker Tabs
What I found most interesting about the organ, was the unique type of rocker tab used, something I, nor my colleagues, have never seen before. I wonder, has anyone reading this come across this style of rocker tab on any other instruments? Could they be a trademark feature of the builder?
Has anyone come across this style of rocker tab before?

W. Hawkins & Son Pipe Organ – A Hidden Gem
The pipe organ remains perched on the gallery of St. Mary’s, a testament to the craftsmanship of its builders. While the church considers its next steps, this historic instrument will continue to serve as a fascinating piece of musical heritage.

I have played the church organ since the age of 11. I am organist at my local catholic church as well as accompanist for a small choral group and keyboard player in a function band. I am committed to ensuring Viscount customers get industry leading service and advice, resulting in the very best organ to suit their needs, be it church, school, home or concert hall.
